The Calvary, featuring the famous pilgrimage Church of St. Rok in Šmarje pri Jelšah, is considered one of the largest and most beautiful Baroque artistic complexes in Slovenia. It is an exceptional monument of popular devotion, whose design and symbolism deeply convey the experience of the path of suffering.

Along the path to the Calvary, visitors can see 14 Stations of the Cross chapels, richly decorated with Baroque ornamentation. The chapels are arranged along a zigzag path leading up to St. Rok’s Church. The path’s layout is carefully planned — pilgrims or visitors can see only the next chapel as they ascend, symbolically emphasizing perseverance along the path of suffering. At the same time, their arrangement creates a theatrical setting that fully captivates visitors.

St. Rok’s Church, the central point of the Calvary, was built gradually, with 1646 considered the year of its founding, as confirmed by the inscription above the sacristy door. The church features typical rural architecture of its time, with Gothic-style pointed windows and a massive exterior. Its interior, however, surprises with rich artistic furnishings and a pronounced Baroque style, creating a contrast with the exterior that evokes a sense of majesty and spiritual depth.

OPENING HOURS: The Calvary is open at all times, while St. Rok’s Church is open by prior arrangement.
