Updated: Feb 18

The Celtic horoscope is based on the lunar cycle, represented by 13 trees. These trees describe us in a general way. More detailed characteristics can be found in the solar cycle, which is represented by 17 trees. Do not take these descriptions of the trees as established dogma. Delve into the nature, biology, and character of your “own” trees, and through this insight, transcend the written knowledge about yourself.

SEAKER OF ANCIENT WISDOM

I am a tree. My legs are roots, my body is the trunk, my arms and hair are the crown. I am completely devoted and adapted to nature. I am free in leaf, fruit, and wood … There is a time when a human transforms into a tree and a tree into a human.

Every tree has its own memory, its own intelligence, and its own destiny. Once a tree sprouts and is given even the smallest opportunity for growth and development, its life is already destined – one day, in the same place, it will leave its ashes behind. A tree adapts to the conditions and vibrations in which it can survive. For a single seed to sprout and become a tree, thousands must perish. The vibration and frequency of a tree that has grown in this way can be recognized in its characteristics.

Celtic sages, the druids, knew the qualities of trees. According to their belief, trees embodied human characters. In their ancient wisdom, we can find our two trees and, through them, come to know ourselves. Perhaps we may even plant them in our garden, so that during our lifetime they allow us to observe them, and remain for our descendants as silent witnesses of our character.

The Celtic horoscope is based on the lunar cycle, represented by 13 trees. These trees describe us in a general way. More detailed characteristics can be found in the solar cycle, represented by 17 trees. Do not take these descriptions of the trees as established dogma. Delve into the nature, biology, and character of your “own” trees, and through this insight, transcend the written knowledge about yourself.

Dušan Debenak, a forestry engineering graduate, is the author of the professional text. He works as the head of the Rogaška Slatina local unit at the Slovenian Forest Service.

How to read the horoscope? Based on your date of birth, first find the corresponding tree in the lunar cycle. Then find the tree in the solar cycle that defines you in more detail.

The arrangement of trees includes characteristic tree species naturally adapted to our region.

LUNAR CYCLE

Birch (24 December – 20 January)

Symbolic meaning: courage, new beginnings, inspiration

The birch is a tree species that conquers new ground. Its light seeds are carried by the wind over great distances. The species’ modest demands regarding growing conditions give it an advantage over others. Its delicately shaped branches and leaves tremble at the slightest breeze, yet even strong winds do not break or uproot it. The birch knows how to merge with the song of the fiercest hurricanes. It is the first tree species to regenerate spontaneously after natural events such as earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions.

The most important characteristics of the birch are: unusual and striking beauty, adaptability, modesty, an exceptional need for light, and great reproductive power.

People born in the period of the birch are direct, devoted, and focused. They motivate others and are always on the lookout for something new. They seek light in everything they do and in everything that surrounds them. They accept themselves and are at peace with who they are. They are not overly ambitious, and they love living in nature and in peace.

Rowan (21 January – 17 February)

Symbolic meaning: protection, thought, expression

In folklore, the rowan is considered a tree of luck that drives away misfortune, which is why it was often planted near houses. If such a planted tree was damaged, it was taken as a sign of impending misfortune. Its root system is deep and well-anchored in the soil. It tolerates low temperatures very well. It likes to conquer new areas, often with the help of birds. It is excellent at preventing avalanches. In its environment, it is recognized by its red berries. The tree cannot tolerate shading.

Characteristics of the rowan: this tree species conquers space due to its modest life requirements; the human eye notices it at least three times – when it blooms (white flowers with a sharp scent), when it bears fruit (red berries), and in autumn, when the leaves turn red. To expand its territory, it relies on the help of birds.

People born in the period of the rowan are mysterious beings who have a calming effect on those around them. They like to offer help and have the ability to show others the beauty of the world and of life.

Great Ash (18 February – 17 March)

Symbolic meaning: wisdom, surrender, ambition

There are more than 60 species of ash trees on Earth, and the mightiest among them is the Great Ash. The second part of its Latin name, Excelsior, indicates that it is truly outstanding among ashes. Druids used ash wood to ward off floods or to pray for rain. With its leafy branches, they fed small animals; with its leaves and seeds, they treated gout; with its bark, they healed wounds; with its sap, they treated burns and snake bites; and its wood was used for fire. The association of this species with water makes sense, as it naturally grows along the banks of mountain streams, preventing soil erosion and reducing the risk of floods. Today, the tree is valued for its strong, durable, and beautiful light-colored wood, used in furniture and parquet flooring. Its wood withstands heavy loads.

Key characteristics of the Great Ash: it requires fresh, deep soil for growth; trees reach the upper canopy; its leaves decompose quickly and enrich the soil. The tree symbolizes harmony, romance, and a solid material foundation.

People born in the period of the Great Ash are charming and delightful. They love to daydream, have vivid imaginations, are intuitive, and inclined toward the arts. Their imaginative world is rich and interesting, never boring. They enjoy life, are impulsive and sometimes selfish, like to challenge fate, and walk on the edge. They are excellent lovers.

Black Alder (18 March – 14 April)

Symbolic meaning: endurance, resilience, strength, passion

The black alder has a wide range, as it is found throughout Europe except in the far north of Scandinavia. Economically important in Slovenia, it is especially common in Prekmurje, where it forms dense stands and can reach heights of up to 30 meters. In the field name of Šmarje pri Jelšah, this tree once symbolized the characteristics of the landscape.

This species loves light but also grows relatively well in shade. It has significantly higher water needs. In Slovenia, it is the species best adapted to wet habitats. It also requires a lot of air humidity, which is provided by floodplains with deep humus-rich or sandy soils and a high water table. On floodplain soils, the black alder is the dominant tree, leaving no chance for other tree species to survive alongside it.

It is a fast-growing species. Its roots have nodules with bacteria that fix nitrogen from the air, enriching the soil. Cut wood decays quickly, but properly preserved, it is very durable. The famous Rialto Bridge in Venice stands on alder trunks.

Key characteristics of the black alder: a fast-growing tree species; dominant on floodplain soils; properly processed wood is long-lasting; enriches the surrounding soil with nitrogen; provides habitat for numerous animal species; prevents other tree species from growing nearby on floodplains.

People born in the period of the alder are always busy and confident. They take on new projects with enthusiasm. Because of their self-confidence, they also earn the trust of others. They do not tolerate wasting time, are energetic and sometimes impulsive, but not extravagant.

White Willow (15 April – 12 May)

Symbolic meaning: imagination, intuition, vision

According to Celtic mythology, the world was created from two eggs hidden among the willow branches. Therefore, the period of the willow symbolizes new beginnings and creations, strongly connected to the influence of the moon. In later times, various attributes were assigned to it. In China, it symbolized immortality; the Slavs attributed protective power to it, and in Europe, it became a symbol of mourning in the Middle Ages. A common misconception even led the great botanist Carl Linnaeus to name the weeping willow, a pure Chinese species, after the city of Babylon.

The weeping willow is one of the most well-known ornamental trees in the world. However, for a long time, all willows with drooping branches have been called weeping willows, even though they are not. Numerous species of willow successfully crossbreed, making identification difficult. The white willow is a majestic tree, reaching up to 30 meters in height and with a trunk circumference of up to 4.5 meters. It is a fast-growing species that thrives best in heavy and swampy soils. Its trunk, bark, and crown provide a true habitat for many animal species.

Characteristics of the white willow: a majestic, fast-growing tree that provides shelter for numerous animal species.

People born in the period of the willow are creative, intuitive, and highly sensitive. They are aware of cycles in change, development, and both good and bad. They are tireless, complex dreamers, passionate and desirous, but often suffer because of love.

All hawthorns are especially attractive when flowering, as their white blossoms completely cover the crown. Most often, they are found in shrub form. In Slovenian forests, six different species of oak are found: pedunculate oak, sessile oak, downy oak, Turkey oak, black oak, and Quercus cerris. The druids derived their name from the Celtic word duir, which means oak. In their beliefs, the oak was a sacred tree representing wisdom, survival, truth, fertility, and peace. People would seek healing near the oak. Its mighty crown rises to spiritual realms, while its roots are firmly grounded in the earth. The species’ key characteristics include strong fertility with acorns and long-lasting wood. The energy frequency of harvested oak wood is believed to carry forward the essence of freedom.

People born under the oak are calm, determined, and responsible. They love the comfort of home and are wary of change. In relationships, they are loyal.
