In the very center of Šmarje pri Jelšah stands the magnificent Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, which gained its present Baroque appearance in the first half of the 18th century. As revealed by the fresco in the presbytery of St. Rok’s Church, the church was once surrounded by a wall, which was only removed during a major renovation in 1878–79. At that time, two tall-walled chapels were added, dedicated to the Holy Cross and St. Michael, giving the church its distinctive cross-shaped layout.

Among the church’s remarkable artworks, a stone statue of St. Michael stands out — figures of Raphael and Gabriel flank the winged warrior. On the outer side of the church wall, two tombstones are embedded, dedicated to the men who played the most significant role in creating what we now know as the Šmarje monuments.
