Skaza House in Šmarje pri Jelšah is an outstanding example of refined small-town architecture from the second half of the 19th century. The old house, which housed the town’s first post office as early as 1850 (of which only the cellar remains), was built in a simple rural style of the late 18th century. The new house reflects the owner’s sensitivity to the architectural trends of the time.
The main and side facades are designed in a late historicist style featuring pronounced neoclassical elements, and rich decoration with profiled window surrounds, stucco, pilasters, and a cornice with attic brackets. The main facade is emphasized above the entrance by a triangular pediment.
Inside, visitors can view the entrance hall, adorned with Baroque-Romantic paintings that depict the seasons of the year, as well as portraits of Slovenian patriots and notable guests who visited the house.
The house was home to Franc Skaza, a Slovenian patriot, national awakener, patron, and leader of progress in Šmarje pri Jelšah, to whom the permanent Skaza Local Exhibition is dedicated.
As part of the exhibition, visitors can also explore the Tourist Information Center (TIC) and a shop with souvenirs and local products. The house also features the Šmarje Wine Cellar, ideal for tastings and refreshments.
OPENING HOURS: Open by prior arrangement.
