Jelšingrad Manor

The original medieval castle acquired its mature Baroque appearance in the early 18th century, when a richly stuccoed Baroque hall was created, featuring a central oval fresco and four painted medallions. The exterior was complemented by a Baroque parterre garden adorned with allegorical figures representing the four seasons.

In the mid-19th century, the eastern wing of the manor was redesigned in a blend of Oriental styles, with three new Oriental halls added, two of which still partially retain their painted and stuccoed Neo-Moorish ceilings. An eclectic park with rare exotic trees was planted alongside the eastern part of the manor, making Jelšingrad unique in Slovenia — the only manor where European Baroque and Oriental Islamic worlds intersect.

Since 2022, the manor has been owned by the Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah, which began the first restoration works in 2023. In the coming years, a comprehensive restoration of the manor and park is planned, along with the development of new facilities and enhanced tourist offerings.

Cultural Experiences at Jelšingrad Manor

Jelšingrad Manor is truly special. The inscription above the entrance is no coincidence:

"Per amor ti ho fatto, per amor ti mantengo."With love I created you, with love I preserve you."

Sitting at the heart of history and once again in the spotlight, the manor now offers visitors a variety of experiences:

  • Restored entrance hall with a tourist desk and souvenirs

  • Hunting room with an exhibition on the history of Jelšingrad Manor

  • Virtual room with VR tourist experiences — explore the manor’s history, castle weddings, footgolf; meet historical personalities, learn about costumes, surroundings, the park, the famous dancing lime tree, utensils, tools, and carriages

  • Room of illusions, a tribute to the 19th-century Oriental halls.
