Martial arts hold a special place in Šmarje pri Jelšah, with four active clubs contributing to the development of combat sports in the region: Karate Club Kozjansko and Obsotelje, Karate Club Rogaška, Karate Club Bushido, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club Martin Krpan Kozjansko. Each club, led by professional coaches with years of experience, supports the development of athletes, competitors, and recreational practitioners.


Many young members participate in national and international competitions, achieving excellent results and representing the Municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah.


Martial arts in Šmarje pri Jelšah are more than just sports—they are a way of life, promoting perseverance, inner strength, and personal growth. They offer opportunities for physical activity, learning, and experiencing the true spirit of sport.


Below, we present all the martial arts clubs active in Šmarje:


Karate Club Kozjansko and Obsotelje, founded in 1986, offers its members training to develop physical and mental abilities, self-control, concentration, and self-respect. Training takes place at four locations, giving members the opportunity to learn karate as a martial art, sport, or recreational activity in the traditional SHOTOKAN style. The club is a member of both national and international karate federations and is known for its professional coaching and the achievements of its competitors.



Karate Club Rogaška Slatina, founded in 1979, is one of the oldest and most successful karate clubs in Slovenia. The club offers high-quality training in sport karate and self-defense under the guidance of experienced masters. Training sessions take place in Rogaška Slatina and Šentvid, and the club is renowned for its excellent results in national and international competitions.



Karate Club Bushido, based in Rogaška Slatina, is a sports association offering professionally guided training under licensed coaches for all age groups, including recreational groups for adults. Club members participate in both national and international competitions, including world and European championships and world leagues. The club’s philosophy is built on values such as discipline, order, perseverance, health, self-confidence, friendship, fun, success, and pride. They emphasize a friendly environment where members feel welcome and motivated for personal development.




Martin Krpan Kozjansko Club offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing training for all age groups. Sessions take place in the gym of Šmarje pri Jelšah Primary School, with beginner programs available for children (ages 10–15) and adults. The training is designed to be safe, fun, and accessible to everyone, regardless of prior experience.
