Šmarje pri Jelšah is a place known for its diverse natural heritage. Its varied landscape, forests, water sources, and rich biodiversity offer excellent opportunities for inquiry-based learning, fieldwork, and the development of students’ science competencies. Thanks to its authentic and unspoiled nature, we provide student groups with various science-themed field days that encourage exploration, outdoor activities, and direct contact with the living world. The natural environment enables students to develop observation skills, understand ecosystems, and cultivate a responsible attitude toward nature. The science field days are organized into three separate thematic units: the human body, the pond ecosystem, and the forest ecosystem.
Science Day: The Body
Science Day: Pond Ecosystem
Science Day: Forest Ecosystem
1. Science Field Day: The Body
In Šmarje pri Jelšah, we have a newly renovated Kneipp Park, composed of functional units built around three therapeutic elements: movement, rest, and phytotherapy. In this beautiful park, slightly removed from the town center, students participate — under professional guidance — in 45 minutes of recreational exercises that include elements of yoga or Pilates. In the second part of the visit, a phytotherapy workshop is held, where students learn about the healing effects of the plants growing in the park and about products from local farms that cultivate herbs or produce natural goods.
2. Science Field Day: Pond Ecosystem
At the pond in Šmarje pri Jelšah, students meet with the local fishing association, which introduces them to fishing equipment and the work of anglers. Students learn about different fish species that inhabit the water, their characteristics, and their natural environment. The anglers also demonstrate practical fishing techniques, and students have the chance to try fishing themselves.
3. Science Field Day: Forest Ecosystem
While exploring the forest ecosystem, students investigate and learn about forest life and the roles of living and non-living factors under the guidance of a professional. Part of the learning trail includes a visit to a forest cabin, which serves as an outdoor classroom for in-depth observation of the surroundings. Students can also participate in recreational activities, as the forest area provides various exercise elements. The field day enables students to gain a deeper understanding of the forest ecosystem, contributing to their cognitive, social, and emotional development. The experiences gained outdoors enrich their everyday lives, and students return home with new knowledge, greater calmness, and a strengthened connection to the natural world.
Science field days are available by prior arrangement.
