“Šmarje Sayings” – Book

Šmarje Sayings is a charming collection of local proverbs, humorous expressions, and wisdom from the Šmarje dialect, which has been passed down through generations of residents in the area. Each “saying” is presented in its original dialect, accompanied by a translation into standard Slovenian, making it accessible to readers from other regions of Slovenia. The collection offers a witty, warm, and authentic glimpse into the life of Šmarje locals — their humor, way of thinking, relationships, farm work, and everyday routines. Beyond entertainment, the book holds cultural significance, preserving dialect expressions that might otherwise be forgotten. Spanning 274 pages, the book is based on the Facebook group Šmarski Argo, founded by Janez Čakš and Žiga Petek, who were also the main initiators of the printed version.
